Does ChatGPT provide reliable citations?

Answer

One of the known problems with ChatGPT is that it sometimes creates false citations for articles that do not exist. UTSA faculty and students have already encountered this problem.

Though a list of sources provided by ChatGPT may look legitimate, you should not depend on it being accurate. If you have any doubts about a citation, or if you're having trouble locating some of the sources, please talk to a Librarian via our chat system, or click on Find Your Librarian (link below) to schedule a one-on-one consultation with the Librarian for your program.

To read more about ChatGPT and fake citations, and for ways it can be useful for research, and ways in which it isn't good for research, see the article linked below from Duke University Libraries.
